Pep Guardiola has acknowledged that Manchester City’s current slump in form is not unexpected, highlighting the challenges that come with maintaining a winning streak over an extended period. Under Guardiola’s management, City has experienced tremendous success, often stringing together impressive runs of victories. However, the team’s recent performances have fallen short of expectations, with five consecutive losses across all competitions.
City’s latest setback came in a 4-0 home defeat to Tottenham, a result that further jeopardized their hopes of defending their Premier League title. This loss followed previous defeats against Brighton, Sporting Lisbon, Bournemouth, and another against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.
Guardiola reflected on the situation, emphasizing that a difficult phase was inevitable at some point. He remarked, as reported by The Mirror, “It’s not like we’ve been struggling for years, but I always knew this moment would come. We’ve had consistent success, but sooner or later, small issues can build up. It’s not one single factor but a collection of minor things going wrong from the start of the season.”
Despite the challenges, Guardiola remains resolute in his responsibility to guide the team back to winning ways. He stated, “When we began losing, I told myself, ‘I must find a solution.’ It’s my duty to help the team improve, regain consistency, and win games again.”
City’s upcoming fixtures will test their resilience. They face Feyenoord in the Champions League on Tuesday before traveling to meet Premier League leaders Liverpool. With Liverpool already holding an eight-point advantage at the top of the table, a loss to them could severely hinder City’s title aspirations.
Adding to the difficulty is the absence of key players, most notably Rodri, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. These absences have compounded the team’s struggles and tested their depth.
Guardiola, however, remains committed to the club’s future, recently extending his contract until 2027. Yet, this period represents one of the most significant challenges of his managerial career as he seeks to steer City back on track.
