Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting the families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as addressing the state’s security challenges. The governor made this known during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held at the trade fair complex in Gusau, the state capital.

A statement by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, highlighted the governor’s participation in key activities during the event, which included inspecting a guard of honor mounted by the Armed Forces and members of the Nigerian Legion. Governor Lawal also led the wreath-laying ceremony and observed a one-minute silence in honor of fallen heroes.

In a significant gesture of support, the governor donated ₦20 million to the Zamfara State Chapter of the Nigeria Legion during the launch of the 2025 Remembrance Emblem, a day before the celebration. This contribution underscores his administration’s focus on the welfare of veterans and their families, whom he described as the backbone of the nation’s peace and sovereignty.

Speaking at the event, Governor Lawal reflected on the importance of Armed Forces Remembrance Day, which is observed annually on January 15 across the nation to honor Nigeria’s veterans. He emphasized that the occasion is a tribute to the selfless men and women who fought to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity, often at the cost of their lives.

“The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is celebrated to commemorate and salute the selfless souls of our veterans who fought gallantly to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, laying down their lives so that we may live in peace,” the governor remarked. “We appreciate and value their commitment and sacrifices, which have made a difference in our lives today. With gratitude and a sense of duty, we pledge to continue to remember them and support the loved ones they left behind.”

Governor Lawal stressed the importance of not only cherishing the legacy of the fallen heroes but also ensuring the well-being of their families. “We must not forget the importance of supporting the families of these fallen heroes and the veterans who fought so that we can go to sleep and who still bear the scars of their service to the nation. By doing so, we honor their sacrifices and demonstrate our gratitude for their unwavering commitment.”

The governor also outlined measures his administration has taken to address Zamfara’s security challenges. These include providing security vehicles equipped with advanced gadgets and motorcycles to enhance operatives’ mobility in difficult terrains. This initiative is aimed at ensuring that no part of the state remains vulnerable to criminal elements.

Furthermore, he reiterated the state government’s efforts to strengthen alliances with neighboring states, security agencies, and other stakeholders as part of a collaborative approach to tackling insecurity. “We remain committed to strengthening strategic alliances to decisively address the security challenges affecting our dear state, as collaboration is key to achieving sustainable peace and stability,” the governor said.

Despite limited resources, Governor Lawal expressed confidence in the progress being made to promote peace in Zamfara, urging vigilance against occasional attacks on soft targets. He reassured residents of his administration’s commitment to covering medical expenses for injured officers and improving the welfare of families of deceased officers.
