Nigeria has reaffirmed its leadership in the global energy sector with the appointment of Ademola Adeyemi-Bero as the Chairman of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Board of Governors for 2025. His appointment, confirmed during the 189th OPEC Conference, underscores the nation’s influence in shaping global energy policies.

Adeyemi-Bero, a seasoned professional with over 38 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, currently serves as Nigeria’s OPEC Governor for 2025. He is also the Chief Executive Officer of FIRST Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited, a leading Nigerian independent oil company. In addition to his appointment, the OPEC Conference named Eng. Adeeb Al-Aama, Saudi Arabia’s OPEC Governor, as Alternate Chairman for 2025.

The announcement, published on OPEC’s official website, highlights Nigeria’s active role in the global oil industry. Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), praised Adeyemi-Bero’s elevation as a testament to the country’s commitment to balanced energy policies that benefit oil producers, consumers, and the global economy.

Lokpobiri also expressed gratitude to Gabriel Aduda, the outgoing Nigerian OPEC Governor, for his exceptional service in advancing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC and maintaining the country’s influential presence in global energy discussions.

The conference addressed critical issues, including reports from the Secretary-General and the Economic Commission Board, and extended the tenure of Haitham Al Ghais as OPEC Secretary-General for another three years, effective August 1, 2025. Member nations commended Al Ghais for his exceptional leadership and dedication to OPEC’s objectives.

Adeyemi-Bero’s appointment not only reflects Nigeria’s contributions to OPEC but also reinforces the nation’s leadership in shaping the future of global energy policies.
