In a vibrant celebration of African music and culture, the United States Consulate in Lagos hosted an exclusive reception on April 3rd at the Consular Residence in Ikoyi to honor the 17th edition of the Headies Awards. The event brought together top artists, government officials, cultural influencers, and industry leaders to recognize the global ascent of Afrobeats and the profound impact of Nigerian music on the international stage.
Speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, expressed her delight at the Headies’ return to Lagos, reaffirming the city’s role as the entertainment capital of Nigeria. She emphasized the Lagos State Government’s commitment, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to fostering growth in the creative industry and ensuring Lagos remains a home for global entertainment events.

U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills Jr., lauded the ongoing collaborations between U.S. entities and the Nigerian music industry. He acknowledged the global success of artists like Burna Boy and Tems and commended Headies founder, Mr. Ayo Animasaun, for his resilience and dedication in consistently promoting African talent through the awards.
Animasaun, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government and other sponsors, noting their support was instrumental to the event’s success.
The evening also featured energetic performances by Beriola and Joel Brown, with a standout debut by businessman and entertainer Cubana Chief Priest.
