Nollywood Mourns The Loss Of Comedy Icon Mr. Ibu

The beloved comedy actor Mr. Ibu passed away on Saturday night, according to an official statement by Mr. Emeka Rollas, National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria. Rollas posted his condolences on Instagram and revealed that Mr. Ibu had died from a tragic cardiac arrest, bringing an end to an incredible career in Nigerian cinema.

The saddening news of Mr. Ibu’s cardiac arrest was initially reported by Don Single Nwuzor, who had been the actor’s dedicated manager for an impressive 24 years. The veteran comedian, known for his infectious humor and iconic performances, unfortunately, could not overcome the sudden health crisis.

Mr. Ibu left an indelible mark on the Nollywood industry throughout his illustrious career, captivating viewers’ hearts with his unparalleled comedic talent. Among the many classic films he is known for is his eponymous “Mr. Ibu.” His career witnessed an enduring partnership with Osita Iheme. Mr. Ibu’s roles in films such as “The Eve,” “London Fever,” “Issakaba,” and “Mr Ibu and His Son,” among others, have made significant contributions to Nigerian cinema.

As fans and the entertainment industry mourn the loss of this comedic genius, Mr. Ibu’s enduring impact on Nigerian cinema will be remembered through the laughter and joy he brought to countless viewers over the years. His legacy as a trailblazer in the realm of comedy will continue to inspire and entertain generations to come.

The 62-year-old reportedly experienced a cardiac arrest, leading to his demise. His passing occurred just a day after the death of another actor, Quadri Oyebamiji, also known as Sisi Quadri in Osun State.

Actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie paid tribute, expressing, “Rest well, sir.” Meanwhile, law professor and former UN rapporteur, Joy Ezeilo, described the late actor as a “beloved” personality who “brought laughter to many.”

It is noteworthy that he had been battling health issues for a long time, which finally led to the amputation of his legs. Previously, he sought prayers and financial support for medical bills from his followers and the general public.


A heated argument erupted between the actor’s family members while he was confined to his hospital bed. Allegations of attempts to misappropriate cash were made by the public during this turbulent time, and accusations were levelled even inside the family.

Daniel Okafor, the actor’s son, and Jasmine Chioma, his adopted daughter, were later detained on suspicion of breaking into his phone and stealing $60,700 (£47,800) for their own benefit. The actor and his adopted daughter, Chioma (Jasmine) were also reportedly involved in an inappropriate relationship, though both parties vehemently denied these allegations

Indeed, the actor’s last years were tumultuous. He asserted surviving multiple poisoning attempts, claiming that three separate incidents had been orchestrated against his life, yet he managed to overcome them all.

Notwithstanding controversies and allegations, the actor’s important contributions to the entertainment industry must never be forgotten.
