The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has claimed a sweeping victory in Kano State’s recent local government elections, securing all 44 chairmanship positions and all 484 councillorship seats across the state’s council areas. This announcement was made by the Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), Professor Sani Lawan Malunfashi, at the commission’s headquarters in Kano.
The election, held on Saturday, saw participation from six political parties: AA, AAC, Accord, ADC, APM, and NNPP. Professor Malunfashi emphasized that KANSIEC successfully fulfilled its constitutional duty by planning, coordinating, and conducting the election, which was marked by a high voter turnout and an atmosphere of peace across all 44 council areas. He noted that this smooth process demonstrated the exercise’s credibility, fairness, and the public’s trust in the democratic system.
The KANSIEC Chairman also expressed deep appreciation for the collective effort of critical stakeholders, including security agencies, media, political party leaders, civil society organizations, and community, religious, youth, and women leaders, whose contributions helped make the exercise a success. He commended parents and children for not allowing themselves to be used to disrupt the electoral process, further reinforcing its peaceful conduct.
Professor Malunfashi described the event as an achievement for grassroots democracy, saying it underscored the people’s positive perception of the election’s transparency and integrity. Certificates for the elected chairmen and councillors will be issued on Monday, formalizing their roles in Kano State’s local government leadership.
Overall, the NNPP’s clean sweep reflects strong local support, while the peaceful process underscores the state’s commitment to credible, fair elections aimed at empowering grassroots governance in Nigeria.
