The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team. The announcement, made by the NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, revealed that the decision followed the recommendation of the Federation’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee, which was endorsed by the NFF Executive Committee.

Chelle, a former player with five caps for Mali, has previously managed clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran. Since 2022, he has served as the head coach of Mali’s national team, the Aiglons. Under his leadership, Mali came close to reaching the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire. They narrowly lost 2-1 after extra time to the host nation and eventual champions, Côte d’Ivoire. However, some critics point out that his tenure did not deliver World Cup qualification or AFCON victory for Mali.

Chelle’s appointment has sparked significant criticism, particularly from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). In a statement signed by Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, Clerk of the Senate at NANS National Headquarters, the student body condemned the NFF’s decision, describing it as a “slap on the country.” They argued that Chelle’s track record lacks the outstanding achievements and tactical expertise needed to manage a team as high-profile as the Super Eagles.

NANS highlighted that several Nigerian coaches with better credentials were overlooked, urging the NFF to prioritize local talent if an African coach was preferred. The body also emphasized the need to invest in and groom Nigerian coaches for national assignments, rather than appointing a foreign coach they described as “half-baked.”

The statement further criticized Chelle’s performance with Mali, noting their struggles at the 2024 AFCON and the absence of any significant laurels during his tenure. “We need a coach that is versed and tactical, who can harness and blend the talents we parade in this country,” NANS declared.

The NFF, however, remains optimistic about Chelle’s ability to lead the Super Eagles to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals. With the next qualification matches scheduled for March, Nigeria must secure victories to stay in contention.
