As the race intensifies for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, led by interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen, are focused on securing a maximum of six points in their double-header against Libya’s Mediterranean Knights in Group D. The first match is set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday evening, followed by the return fixture at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Libya.

Eguavoen outlined the team’s practical approach, stating that winning both matches is the best route to guarantee their qualification well before the final matchday. “We don’t want to be in any anxiety in the run-in of this qualifying campaign,” he emphasized. With Nigeria currently sitting at the top of Group D with four points from their two matches, a double win would elevate their tally to 10 points, solidifying their position.

However, the team will face the challenge of competing without key player Victor Osimhen, who is sidelined due to injury. Eguavoen acknowledged this absence but expressed confidence in the available strikers to deliver the necessary goals. “I believe in the other strikers available to get us the goals that will give us the three points in Uyo and the three points in Libya,” he assured fans.

Twenty of the 23 invited players participated in training on Tuesday evening, with defender Bright Osayi-Samuel and forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidera Ejuke joining the camp the following morning. This preparation is critical, as Nigeria seeks to maintain their lead in the group amidst stiff competition. Benin Republic and Rwanda, both trailing Nigeria, will face off against each other, meaning that their outcomes will also impact Nigeria’s chances.

The stakes are high, as victories for Benin Republic could see them rise to nine points, while Rwanda is currently struggling at two points. Eguavoen reiterated the team’s determination, stating, “There are possibilities and opportunities for us to sail home at the end of these two matches.” With Libya’s delegation already in Nigeria, the stage is set for a thrilling clash as the Super Eagles aim to secure their AFCON ticket ahead of the final round of games.
