The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, has cautioned protesters to desist from vandalising public or private property during Monday’s planned demonstrations in Abuja over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The FCT Commandant of the Corps, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, issued the warning on Sunday in Abuja, emphasising that the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) remains a top priority for the agency. His warning followed reports that separate groups plan to stage protests either demanding or opposing Kanu’s release.

Odumosu said the Corps had massively deployed officers and special forces across strategic areas in the FCT to safeguard infrastructure and ensure the safety of residents before, during, and after the rallies. “The Corps will not condone any form of vandalism or theft of public and private facilities, all in the name of protest,” he said.

He urged citizens to adhere strictly to court directives regulating public demonstrations, warning that the NSCDC would deal decisively with anyone who attempted to hijack or disrupt the peaceful protests. “We are prepared, as always, to ensure there are no incidents of destruction of properties or threats to peace in the territory,” he added.

The Commandant explained that the deployed personnel had been thoroughly briefed to maintain professionalism and civility while carrying out their duties. Officers were instructed to avoid harassment, intimidation, or accidental discharge, as no form of indiscipline or overzealous conduct would be tolerated. He also advised that the men adopt a non-kinetic approach in enforcing peace and order.

Odumosu further cautioned those with criminal intentions to steer clear of the rallies, warning that anyone caught engaging in unlawful acts would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The warning comes amid rising tension in Abuja as groups prepare to protest over the continued detention of Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021. The IPOB leader faces a seven-count charge of terrorism and treasonable felony, stemming from his activities with the outlawed separatist group.

The protests, spearheaded by #RevolutionNow convener Omoyele Sowore and other civil society organisations, are expected to proceed despite a Federal High Court order restricting mass protests around key national institutions in the FCT.
