International music star Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam, widely known as Akon, is facing the end of his nearly three-decade-long marriage. His wife, Tomeka Thiam, filed for divorce earlier this week in Fulton County, Georgia, citing irreconcilable differences.

Court filings dated September 11, 2025, show that Tomeka is asking for joint legal custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey. However, she is requesting primary physical custody, with Akon being granted visitation rights. Alongside custody arrangements, Tomeka is also seeking spousal support but has asked the court to deny any such support to the singer himself.

So far, neither Akon nor Tomeka has released a public statement addressing the divorce proceedings.

Akon, now 51, has previously spoken openly about his lifestyle and beliefs. In a 2022 interview on The Zeze Mills Show, he revealed that he is a father of nine children and strongly believes in polygamy, linking the practice to his African roots. The Senegalese-American singer described polygamy as “part of our culture,” arguing that it feels natural within his background. He also criticized the Western approach to marriage, claiming it imposes rules that disregard nature.

Despite his views, Akon has admitted that maintaining a balance between his large family and his demanding music career has been challenging. He once acknowledged not always being physically present for milestones such as school events or holidays, but emphasized that he fulfills his duty by ensuring his family is financially secure.

“My role is to make sure there’s a roof over their heads and food on the table,” he said in a past interview. “If I can be there in person for the extras, I will, but my responsibility comes first.”

The artist has also noted that technology helps him stay connected to his children when his schedule keeps him away. Through video calls and other digital tools, he says he remains a part of their daily lives, even from afar.

Akon rose to global fame in 2004 with his breakout single Locked Up, followed by chart-topping hits like Smack That and Don’t Matter. Beyond his music career, he has been recognized for his entrepreneurial ventures and philanthropy, particularly his efforts to bring electricity to parts of Africa.
