Funke Akindele’s latest film, Everybody Loves Jenifa (ELJ), is making waves at the Nigerian box office, achieving record-breaking success since its release on December 13, 2024.
The film grossed an impressive N206 million during its opening weekend, setting a new benchmark in Nollywood. On its debut Friday, ELJ earned N45.22 million, a 30% increase in first-day admissions compared to Akindele’s 2023 hit, A Tribe Called Judah. It also broke records for the highest-grossing single day in Nollywood history, raking in N87.8 million in just one day.
Despite facing challenges—such as missing screenings at Genesis Cinemas and losing part of the day at Silverbird Cinemas—the film’s performance remained strong, reflecting Akindele’s star power and the growing appeal of her productions.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Akindele expressed her gratitude: “Thank you Lord!!! Thank you Nigeria!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!”
The film’s success isn’t limited to Nigeria. Everybody Loves Jenifa has also premiered internationally in 30 countries, distributed by Nile Group Entertainment. This marks another milestone for Nollywood, as it continues to gain global recognition.
With ELJ, Funke Akindele has not only strengthened her reputation as a powerhouse in the Nigerian film industry but also expanded the reach of Nollywood to international audiences. The film’s exceptional performance solidifies its place in history, setting a new standard for future productions.
