Former U.S. President Donald Trump strongly rejected claims that China could gain control over Canada, declaring such a possibility “impossible.” In a brief statement shared on the official White House X account, Trump emphasized, “The last thing the World needs is to have China take over Canada. It’s NOT going to happen, or even come close to happening! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Although Trump did not elaborate further, his remarks have stirred discussions in diplomatic and political circles, particularly amid ongoing concerns about China’s growing economic and strategic influence worldwide, including in North America.

In recent years, China has significantly expanded its economic relationship with Canada, engaging in trade, technology collaborations, and investments in infrastructure. These developments have occasionally raised eyebrows in Washington, which remains wary of China’s reach in Western-aligned countries.

Previously, Trump threatened to impose a 100% tariff on Canadian goods if Canada pursued closer ties with China. He criticized Canadian leaders for favoring relations with China over security partnerships supported by the U.S.

China ranks as Canada’s second-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade nearing $100 billion in 2023. Canada exports resources such as crude oil, gold, and rapeseed to China, while importing technology products and automobiles.

Trump’s tariff threats were part of a broader effort to protect American industries and renegotiate trade deals amid Canada’s strengthening economic links with China. This situation highlights wider global tensions surrounding China’s economic influence and U.S. trade policy strategies.
