Popular Nigerian entertainers including Skales, Korede Bello, Teni and veteran DJ Jimmy Jatt recently brought excitement and inspiration to inmates at the Medium Custodial Centre in Kirikiri, Lagos, through a special music outreach.

The event, known as the SALT Concert, highlighted how music and creative expression can play a meaningful role in rehabilitation within correctional facilities. It was organised through a collaboration between music and prison reform advocate Lamboginny and the Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR).

For many of the inmates, the concert offered a rare moment of joy, connection and emotional release, reinforcing the idea that creative arts can support mental well-being and personal transformation, even in confinement.

CELSIR’s Executive Director, Joke Aladesanmi, described the initiative as part of the organisation’s broader commitment to promoting dignity, rehabilitation and second chances for people within the justice system. She noted that CELSIR aims to deepen such creative interventions across correctional centres nationwide, with a focus on restoration and hope.

Lamboginny also stressed the power of music as a tool for healing and social change, adding that partnerships between civil society groups and the creative industry can positively influence correctional reform.

The Lagos State Controller of Corrections, Daramola George, reaffirmed the Nigerian Correctional Service’s support for programmes that prioritise rehabilitation. Performances by Seyi Sodimu and DJ Kaywise further energized the event.
