In a momentous event held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, the ancient city of Oyo came alive as Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade was crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The coronation, which took place at Oliveth Baptist High School, drew dignitaries, traditional rulers, and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria, marking a significant chapter in Yoruba history.
Among the notable guests were the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar; Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III; Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu (representing President Bola Tinubu); and Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams. The event also hosted the Deputy Governors of Oyo and Osun States, Oluwo of Iwoland, Soun of Ogbomosoland, and several other royal and political figures.
In his address, President Tinubu, through Adelabu, underscored the importance of the Alaafin stool as a symbol of cultural pride, unity, and historical depth. He noted that the new Alaafin should serve as a bridge between traditional institutions and modern governance, and play a pivotal role in resolving communal conflicts while preserving Yoruba identity.
Governor Seyi Makinde, who led the ceremony, shared insights into the selection process, reaffirming that the decision was not influenced by political lobbying. “No one influenced me to select the new Alaafin,” he stated. “The person chosen by Ifa and the people of Oyo is the one whose coronation was done today. Some tried to lobby me with money, but I said no. The stool of the Alaafin is not for sale.”

In his own remarks, Oba Owoade expressed deep appreciation for the support shown by the people of Oyo and promised to be a monarch dedicated to progress and unity. A book titled The Palace Diary was unveiled during the event to commemorate the historic occasion.
The day featured vibrant cultural displays, including eulogies, traditional dances, and a symbolic parade of the Alaafin’s sculpture. Gani Adams, a member of the Oyo cabinet, clarified that while he had no role in the selection process, his duty remains ensuring the security and peace of the kingdom.
The event ended on a high note with goodwill messages from various dignitaries, including the former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Monsurat Sunmonu, and other stakeholders who hailed the new monarch’s ascension as a new dawn for the Oyo Kingdom.
