Nigeria’s national power grid has experienced multiple collapses in recent weeks, further highlighting ongoing instability. The latest incident, a partial disturbance, occurred on November 5, 2024, around 1:52 pm, when power generation, which had peaked at 3,934 MW earlier that morning, dropped to zero by mid-afternoon.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributed this disruption to a series of line and generator trippings, leading to grid instability. Power restoration began promptly, with supply to Abuja restored by 2:49 pm, and efforts ongoing to restore other affected areas.
This latest failure marks the eighth grid collapse in 2024, with three occurring within one week in October. Two days after a major October 19 collapse, another breakdown was reported, which TCN linked to a fire outbreak at the Jebba transmission station.
TCN’s data show that between 2020 and 2024, Nigeria recorded 14 total and six partial grid disturbances, a 76.47% reduction compared to the previous five years. Despite this improvement, public frustration remains high.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has pointed to outdated infrastructure as a key factor in these frequent disruptions. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has expressed concern over the setbacks in grid stability, which undermine recent progress in infrastructure improvements. While TCN engineers continue to work on restoring power and addressing these issues, a permanent solution to stabilize Nigeria’s power grid remains elusive.
