The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has condemned reports of sexual assault and harassment against women during a recent festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.
In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry described the incidents as deeply troubling and a violation of both human dignity and the law. It underscored that no cultural or traditional practice can justify acts of sexual violence, pointing out that Nigeria’s legal framework, including the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, strictly criminalizes such behavior.
The Ministry called for a thorough investigation into all allegations, insisting that those responsible must face justice. Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, it emphasized that safeguarding the rights, safety, and dignity of women and girls remains a top priority, and victims should never be silenced.

The Ministry praised the Delta State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police CP Aina Adesola, for its swift response, urging a transparent and expedited investigation to ensure accountability. It also pledged to collaborate with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to provide immediate assistance to victims, including medical attention, psychosocial support, and legal aid.
Additionally, the Ministry announced plans to engage traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and local authorities to address harmful cultural practices and promote values that foster respect, safety, and social harmony. The public was urged to cooperate with law enforcement to help ensure justice is served and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
