The political atmosphere in Kano State remains tense as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has once again ordered the appearance of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja over allegations linked to the controversial 2024 suspension of APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
In a letter dated May 23, 2025, with file number CR/3000/IGP-SEC/MU/ADM/14/ABJ/VOL 118/57, the IGP instructed the Kano State Government to release Dawakin-Tofa for questioning. The letter, signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Akin Fakorede, from the IGP’s Monitoring Unit, accused Dawakin-Tofa of playing a key role in a case involving criminal defamation, intentional insult, impersonation, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The police want the governor’s aide to appear before SP Mojirode B. Obisiji at noon on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Louis Edet House, Force Headquarters, Abuja, to shed light on the allegations.

This renewed invitation stems from the 2024 incident when Ganduje was suspended by the executive committee of his ward over allegations of anti-party activities and non-payment of dues. Though the APC later nullified the suspension, the development sparked political uproar. Fingers quickly pointed at Dawakin-Tofa, a known rival of Ganduje and a native of the same local council. Ganduje accused him and the NNPP-led Kano State Government of orchestrating the move to weaken his political clout.
This isn’t the first clash between the police and Dawakin-Tofa. In December 2024, the IGP also ordered his arrest over the same matter, a move that triggered legal action from the Kano State Government. Dawakin-Tofa secured a court injunction barring security agencies from arresting or harassing him, but the latest summons suggests that legal shield may be cracking.
