Former Kano State Governor and 2023 New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially resigned from the party with immediate effect.
In a statement, Kwankwaso described the decision as a difficult but necessary step, citing the need for “strategic realignment” in response to Nigeria’s changing political environment.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), effective immediately,” he said, emphasizing that his departure was not taken lightly. As the party’s former National Leader and presidential flagbearer, he acknowledged the weight of the decision.
Kwankwaso explained that his resignation is motivated by a desire to join a platform that he believes will better facilitate meaningful national change. “Given the current political trajectory of the nation, it has become essential for me to associate with another platform that presents the most effective avenue for driving progress and transformation in the country,” he noted.

He expressed gratitude to the NNPP leadership and members for their unwavering support. “I extend my heartfelt thanks to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and the entire National Working Committee for their dedication during my time with the party,” Kwankwaso said. He also recognized other party organs, including the Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, and members across all levels, as well as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
“I also sincerely thank all leaders from the ward to state level and all followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their commitment to our shared goals,” he added.
Despite stepping down, Kwankwaso emphasized his continued commitment to national development. “I remain open to collaboration with party members and others as we work together to build a better and more prosperous future for our nation,” he concluded.
