Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, marked a historic milestone with its 25th anniversary and the 11th to 15th combined convocation ceremonies, celebrating years of academic excellence, institutional growth, and distinguished contributions from notable individuals.
The grand event brought together dignitaries, faculty, alumni, and students to reflect on the university’s progress and future prospects. In her welcome address, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Omenugha, highlighted COOU’s uninterrupted academic calendar and five years of steady academic achievements. “This stable academic calendar is a legacy we intend to sustain,” she said, expressing the university’s openness to partnerships that can enhance educational opportunities.
A key highlight of the ceremony was the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on distinguished personalities for their outstanding contributions to society. Among them was the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, who received a Doctor of Public Health and Nutrition (Honoris Causa) in recognition of her transformative “Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo” initiative. Other honourees included Ada Chukwudozie, the South East Chairman of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria; Igwe Alex Onyido, the traditional ruler of Ogidi Kingdom; and renowned businessmen Chidozie Mbanefo and Chief Christopher Ndubuisi.

Prof. Omenugha noted that the awards, termed the “Ojukwu Legacy Awards,” are meant to encourage individuals who have distinguished themselves in their various fields. She thanked the state governor for his numerous contributions to the university community.
In his address, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, reflected on the remarkable transformation of COOU under his administration. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with the private sector and local communities to accelerate development. “The university is far different from what it used to be since my last visit,” he remarked, while calling for the immortalization of the university’s founder, the late Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju. “He is not celebrated enough here. We must find something significant to immortalize him.”
Congratulating his wife on her honorary doctorate, the governor praised her dedication to public health and wellness advocacy, noting her inspiring work through her initiative.
Also speaking at the event, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, the university’s Pro-Chancellor, emphasized the need for communal engagement and intellectual openness. “A university is a space where disagreement can occur in a spirit of cordiality,” he said.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, lauded the administration’s unwavering commitment to education as a tool for progress.
