The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria.

The declaration was made on Sunday by the union’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, during a press briefing held at the University of Abuja.

According to Piwuna, the union’s decision follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued on September 28, 2025. He explained that there had been no significant progress to halt the planned strike, hence all ASUU branches have been directed to suspend academic activities from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025.

“The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as resolved at the last NEC meeting,” he stated.

This latest confrontation between ASUU and the Federal Government comes amid ongoing negotiations intended to prevent another disruption in the country’s higher education system.

Earlier in the week, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, revealed that discussions with ASUU and other university-based unions were in their final stages. He said the talks were focused on addressing long-standing concerns related to welfare, funding, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.

Alausa added that the current administration had made tangible efforts to meet some of the union’s demands, including the release of ₦50 billion for Earned Academic Allowances. He also noted that an additional ₦150 billion had been earmarked in the 2025 budget for university needs assessment, to be released in three installments.
